That was the theme of our participation in the Aurora Pride Parade last week and Kim-Char & Chelley Siebert’s presentation on Sunday. As I listened to them share their songs and message, I was struck by the fact that I have always felt my heart was safe at Unity in Naperville. Not just as a gay person, but as a person. Period.

I walked through Unity’s doors with a lifetime of conditioning and preconceptions, equipped with guarded walls, which I put up to ensure I would feel comfortable and safe. Through the years I have attended Unity, there have been messages and classes and events to encourage me to open my heart and venture into a world without walls. I can’t always do it, but I have come a long way.

And that’s the point. One needs a safe place to be open to new experiences and ideas. When your heart feels safe (as it does for me here at UIN), you can begin to let yourself be vulnerable IN FRONT OF OTHER PEOPLE.

Sing in the choir, drum in a drum circle, read books you never heard of before Unity, become a board member, run an event, read the announcements, run the PowerPoint or livestream, attend a group or class, talk to someone new and become connected. Your heart is safe here.

Your heart will soar here.
