Wakening From Unconscious Bias

This past Sunday we discussed honoring the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by remembering the work we have to do…to Waken From Unconscious Bias. As I explained, our brain does not help us with that…it actually seems to work against us.  And so we’ll need to set conscious intentions to continually practice self-observation…continue to notice our behavior, ask ourselves what hidden beliefs are driving that behavior, and then make a conscious effort to transform that belief. This is not just our work in the realm of racial bias, but all bias…all fear…all limiting behaviors. It is our very purpose for being… to reveal the Spirit of God in our health, our finances, our relationships, our work, our charity toward others…day after day after day.  We have a lot of history to learn from and overcome, but as the poet, Amanda Gorman says in a portion of her poem “New Day’s Lyric”…

We are learning

That though we weren’t ready for this,
We have been readied by it.
We steadily vow that no matter
How we are weighed down,
We must always pave a way forward.

This hope is our door, our portal.
Even if we never get back to normal,
Someday we can venture beyond it,
To leave the known and take the first steps.
So let us not return to what was normal,
But reach toward what is next.

… For wherever we come together,
We will forever overcome.

Watch Amanda Gorman recite her entire inspiring new work here…

And join me next Sunday as we reach for a new day, a new world, a new consciousness…together.

Love,

Rev. Kitty
