Susan Snowden – New

A couple of weeks ago we unveiled a new Mission Statement for Unity in Naperville: We are a vibrant, inclusive community for personal growing and joyful knowing of our oneness with Spirit and each other. Now the new year has turned, and we often have new year’s resolutions (or we have given up on making them, but still note that we don’t have them!) Resolutions, Mission statements, Goals … we have the big ideas that we hope will lead to good things down the road.

Most of the time, I get so caught up in the day to day work and duties that the month, the quarter and then the year passes and I FINALLY remember to check in on those lofty ideas. I know what I am supposed to do. I am supposed to work on those things daily, weekly, bit-by-bit to get them done. Somehow those ‘goal bits’ don’t seem to make it into the day of regular work duties, regular housekeeping, pet servitude (cats you know), etc. There is the Zen quote: “Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.” It reminds us those daily duties will always be there. Personal growing, joyful knowing, remembering who we are DURING those daily duties is key to making any progress.

The ‘good things’ I intend to strive for might indeed be down the road, but they are along the road too. This community keeps reminding me of that, of our oneness with Spirit and each other. I thank you all for that. I may or may not get all those goals for the year worked into my days, but I am ever blessed to have you on the journey with me, chopping wood, carrying water. Have a great year everyone!
