Getting in touch with your true Spirituality & GRIT – Beth Schwartz

Hello, my Unity friends!

For those of you who don’t know, by profession I am an Environmental Consultant, working for a firm here in Naperville. In the midst of the Coronavirus shut down, my company has sponsored a book study via small group Zoom calls with people in our other offices across the country. The book we are reading is called GRIT – The Power of Passion and Perseverance, by Angela Duckworth. This is not a brand-new book, first published in 2016. And as I am reading it, it strikes me constantly that the ideas she presents are as old as time, and very Unity!

I’ve not finished half of the book yet, but so far, Ms. Duckworth has spent her career studying why some people succeed and others do not. She discusses that so many very gifted people do not ‘succeed in life’ as much as some less gifted, people – so why? Her research has shown that the quality of grit, which she defines as the combination of passion and perseverance, is a much better predictor of someone’s potential for success.

We know in Unity that you attract what you focus on, and the more you focus on something, the more of it you will attract. As Kitty recently discussed in a message, “Imagine yourself….we create our life experience through our thoughts, our feelings and our beliefs….It’s about faking it ‘til you make it and your words can help you make it.” Does this not sound like perseverance?

It makes sense that you will succeed much more at something you are passionate about rather than sitting back and expecting success to come to you because you are smart. My author says…

Great things are accomplished by those people whose thinking is active in ONE direction, who employ everything as material, who always zealously observe their own inner life and that of others, who perceive everywhere models and incentives, who never tire of combining together the means available to them.

Does that not sound like she is saying you need to get in touch with your true Spirit for things to come easy to you?

Take this time of self-isolation to get in touch with what truly speaks to your soul, and then when this is over, we can all burst forth from our homes on a fresh path with real GRIT!

Peace to you all,

Beth Schwartz, UIN Board President
