Joy of Anticipation

One of the Advent Book quotes is “I remember to savor the joy of anticipation.” Hidden Brain has a podcast called “Work 2.0 Game On!” about gaming being used in training and work situations. In manufacturing we have continuous improvement and how to “fail faster”. A book called “How to Think About Exercise” covers games, losing, and striving for fitness. My brain boiled all these stories together.

Here is the stew that followed. We don’t like to fail. That is, however, how we learn. You make a plan try it out, and if it does not work, you try something different. The faster you make those iterations the faster you get to what does work. They train pilots and surgeons in simulation games to experience certain scenarios because failure there is a not deadly. We often want to just jump to perfect, no practice, no mistakes, no surprises… well now it is starting to sound boring. We are here to learn and grow. We do want to do it safe, but we need it just the same. Play the game, take the test, do the work. Get the results. Anticipation – that humming feeling that there is more to come, that we can do better, that there is a new gift in the waiting. The joy of anticipation… I remember to savor the journey, the fails that teach me something, even if it is just what does not work. Savor… fully appreciate. “I remember to savor the joy of anticipation.”
