Beth Schwartz – Volunteers Are Our Life Blood

Thomas Carlyle once said, “The work an unknown good man has done is like a vein of water, flowing hidden underground, secretly making the ground green.”  I absolutely love this quote!  He creates a lovely picture of how a person who volunteers can create and amplify the energy in any situation.  We have been celebrating our Unity volunteers every month, thanking them for their selflessness, and how they have helped to grow the energy of Unity itself, building a vibrant community!

I was recently awed by the group of individuals that have stepped up to serve our community by helping to create our upcoming  Mardi Gras – “Eyes in Disguise” fundraising event.  We started our meeting with an outline of the tasks at hand, and shortly had a person stepping up to chair each task area and run with it.  While no one actually offered to take over the coordination of the whole event from me, I feel very comfortable that the capable and centered individuals who are working on these tasks will make my job infinitely easier!  No one can do everything, but everyone can do something.

Unity offers many opportunities for serving, as can be seen by the number of sign up sheets on our Ways To Serve table. Also, as we move closer to the fundraising event, we will need a few more people to assist in one-time things, like set up/take down, transporting prizes to the event, etc.  So there is plenty of opportunity for everyone at Unity to be that hidden vein of water underground, and secretly make Unity the wonderful community that we love!  “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Thank you all for being the light that you are!
