Beth Schwartz – “Metaphysics Avoids Extinction?”

I’ve been thinking a lot lately on what is mine to do in this tumultuous year of pandemic and political and racial unrest. Unity, and the principles of New Thought teach us integrity, responsibility and accountability. New Thought teaches that we must take action because we know we deserve better and we are willing to take action to manifest change.

Reverend Mary Beth Speers quoted R. Buckminster Fuller in her message today. I actually met Bucky Fuller once, when I was a Geography student at SIU Carbondale. I was part of the campus environmental group that planned Earth Day activities, and we brought Bucky back to campus (he had been a faculty member in the design department long before I was a student there) to deliver a speech. Rev. Mary Beth shared his quote: “Quite clearly, our task is predominantly metaphysical, for it is how to get all of humanity to educate itself swiftly enough to generate spontaneous social behaviors that will avoid extinction.” This really struck a note for me! Can you imagine, if everyone on earth were suddenly and fully awakened and adopted Unity’s principles, how quickly the world’s social discord would melt into a warm pool of primordial love, hope and gratitude?

Unity is based on spiritual principles that support personal evolution and the good of the community. While I studied Geography in college, maps cannot help me navigate my way through this tension-filled year. It is Spirit that will be my guiding beacon, and as Rev. Mary Beth said, I will allow a greater newer moment to come forth in my life. I will also rely on the faith, wisdom and love within me to imagine and co-create with you all, a gentle, loving and positive direction for Unity in Naperville during these times.
