Unity was founded on the practice of spiritual healing. Both co-founders of the Unity movement, Myrtle and Charles Fillmore, experienced extraordinary healings. Myrtle was given only six months to live as she faced incurable tuberculosis and Charles had suffered from a skating accident as a child which stunted the growth of one leg by four inches. But as they applied their faith to newfound spiritual principles through prayer and meditation, Myrtle went on to live another forty years and Charles’ leg grew three inches before he passed at age 94.Â
Unity’s Five Principles, as listed in our BELIEFS, all combine to provide a foundation for spiritual healing.
- God is the one power, all good, everywhere present.
- There is no power called sickness. God is the only power and God’s nature is Good, Life, Love. Nothing can separate us from the wholeness of God.
- We are each individual, eternal expressions of God and therefore inherently good.
- God is Spirit and so are we. God’s nature is Wholeness and there is no sickness in God. As an expression of God, I do not inherit sickness. Jesus told us to call no one on earth father, for our only Father is heavenly. (Matt. 23.9)
- We create our life experience through our thoughts, feelings and beliefs.
- I am the only one who can choose my thoughts, feelings and beliefs. Sickness has no power over my thinking, but my thinking has power over sickness. As Jesus said, it is done to me as I believe. (Matt. 9.29)
- Affirmative Prayer consciously aligns our thoughts with the truth about God in our lives.
- If sickness expresses in my body, I choose to affirm the presence of divine life, strength, vitality, and well-being. In the midst of the illness is the ALLNESS of God. As Jesus said, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” (John 15.7) Prayer trains our mind to align with divine truth and it is done to us as we believe.
- Knowing spiritual truth satisfies. Practicing spiritual truth transforms.
- It does not help to know these truths and then contradict them with our words or actions. Our subconscious mind is always building on what we give it. Jesus said, “If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.” (John 13.17) Begin with baby-steps if necessary, but at least do your best to talk about your heart’s desire rather than complain about symptoms. “I’m looking forward to feeling better. I’m grateful for all that my body is able to do.” If your body’s not able to do anything except breathe, then give thanks for your breath. Visualize yourself living with a smile on your face. Pray for someone else who is seeking healing.
Healing Insights…
Instead of thinking about his apparent condition, he is to concentrate his attention upon God, that he may become so aware of God’s presence and God’s perfect pattern of life and God’s qualities that he will forget old errors and dissolve the conditions that he has built upon from dependence on something or someone outside himself. Myrtle Fillmore–Mother of Unity – Thomas Witherspoon
Positive thinking is a definite step toward healing. God has given us the power to think, and our thoughts can either hinder or put us on the forward path. You must refuse to let thoughts of disharmony and negation enter your mind. Center your thought on God, think about God and God’s healing, cleansing, vitalizing life flowing in and through you. Let go anxious, fearful thoughts, for they keep you from thinking about wholeness and perfection. Remember that God created you in God’s image and likeness. God’s life and health fill every part of your being. Every cell is alive with energy and vitality. Foundations in Unity
Your body has a need to feel loved. Regularly blessing your organs, tissues and cells “motivates” them to perform as they were created and designed to perform. Your body loves to hear the truth about itself. It breaks whatever pattern it was following to follow a new design. Take time to bless your body. Do it on a regular basis as part of a meditative experience. However, it can also be done whenever you have a few minutes, even at a traffic light or waiting for an appointment or during a TV commercial. Adventures on the Quest – Richard & Mary Alice Jafolla
It came to me when meditating to imagine just how I’d feel if I were freed from the condition. I entered fully into the image of freedom and wholeness and discovered I was in actual manifestation of all that my imagining faculty declared me to be. Myrtle Fillmore
Belief comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Set aside a time every day, a definite time, and pray whether you believe or not. Take a Truth statement and repeat it over and over. It does not matter that at first you do not believe it to be true. If you will persistently affirm Truth, even though you do not believe it at first, you will find that your prayers have power. Faith is like a mustard seed and it will grow. Pray, pray, and keep praying; affirm, and yet affirm once more. Your persistent prayers will succeed.
