Unity describes Meditation differently from Prayer. (click here to learn more about prayer or to leave a prayer request).
Meditation is a spiritual practice that can be performed in a variety of ways and has many physical, mental and emotional benefits. Its purpose as we use it during our Sunday Service is to calm our being and create an opening in our thoughts to receive inner guidance from Divine Mind, Christ Consciousness, or our Higher Self.
It’s also an opportunity to “renew the mind” as Paul instructed in Romans 12. When we quiet the busyness of the conscious mind and give it specific divine qualities or spiritual principles to focus on, we transform the subconscious mind (which is responsible for our behaviors.) This helps us to release habitual error thoughts (fears, negative beliefs or judgments) which tend to interfere with the expression of our Higher Self. As Proverbs 23.7 says, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Click here to learn more about how our thinking creates our life experiences.)
A single meditation won’t necessarily cleanse our subconscious which is why we call Meditation a “practice.” We encourage you to come back to this page or our Sunday Message Archives and listen to the meditations regularly until you’re able to guide yourself toward thoughts that align with spiritual truth.
Here’s a simple meditation most people can practice on their own. Feel free to replace the word “Peace” with another spiritual quality that you may prefer to experience…such as Harmony, Love, Life, Vitality, Strength, Abundance, Wisdom, Understanding, Light. These are all qualities of God and what we meditate on regularly, we become.
- Take 3 deep breaths at your own pace.
- Think of someone or something that you love or appreciate and feel that appreciation til it fills your being.
- Hold the idea in your mind…
- ”I am thankful for peace.” (or another spiritual quality). REPEAT 3 TIMES, with a deep breath in between.
- “I am filled with peace.” REPEAT 3 TIMES, with a deep breath in between.
- “I am peace.” REPEAT 3 TIMES, with a deep breath in between.
- Finish with more deep breaths until you feel complete.
